Brookside Master Bedroom Plans

Now that we have doors to our Master Bedroom, it is a little bit easier to envision the space. We have already purchased the upholstered bed and the bedside tables. We have also painted the walls Sherwin Williams Anonymous. I am still debating on the color, but for now we are sticking with it. Here is a look at the other "base layers" (and sources) I have picked for our room:

1// Upholstered Bed. We were so excited to have a big master bedroom that we splurged on this gorgeous bed from Mitchell Gold Bob Williams right when we moved into our new home. We love having a king size bed and it makes for a great focal point in our large space.

2// Moroccan Souk Rug. This rug is ultra plush and will be great to put my feet on first thing in the morning. I have wanted this rug for like ever and now have the perfect spot for it. I also really like the geometric pattern and ethnic feel the rug gives the room. There are lots of places to buy souk rugs, but we are digging this one.

3// Semi Flush Fixtures. Our current lighting situation is an interesting one. Currently, there  are 4 sconces and 2 ceiling fans. The ceiling fans have no lighting so we are left with dim sconce light and the light from our current bedside table lamps (which I might add we are down to one table lamp after a certain kitty knocked one over). All that to say, our lighting situation is looking dim (hah!). We are currently on the hunt for fixtures similar to the ones shown. We need three light fixtures in a slightly larger size to provide adequate overhead lighting.

4//Ikea Trysil 3-Drawer Dressers. We stumbled on these during our last trip to IKEA. We really liked this option (and this one), but the price point was really eating into our budget. We decided to go for the low cost option (the look for less if you will). We like the metal legs, the clean lines, and the wood finish. We also found this Trysil Ikea Hack that we thought was a super creative way to add some brass to the look.

5// Fiddle Leaf Fig. The perfect way to add modern greenery to a room. I am still debating on buying a real or faux plant. My track record for keeping indoor plants alive is not so hot. Have any of you bought a fiddle leaf fig? What was the upkeep like? Easy to maintain?

More to come as we pick out bedding, chairs, upholstery, pillows and lamps to complete the look of the master. What type of bedding and decor would you choose to go with this current look?

How To Prime & Paint Solid Wood Doors {and a FREE Printable!!}

Don't forget to look for the free HOW TO Printable at the end!

When we made our big to do list, we talked about adding doors to our Master Bedroom. (Yes, we bought a house without doors to our bedroom). I laugh because it has been 3 months and Ty and I have gotten use to having entire conversations from the living room to our bedroom with no problem. We are excited to have some privacy when guests come, and to stop tip toeing around in the morning when one of us gets up before the other. Because of the archway, these doors needed to be custom so we contacted a contractor in our area and had him come out to measure and create a template for the doors. 6 weeks later they arrived at our home to be installed. Our next step is to paint the doors. We did a similar door painting project on an exterior door in our last house, but this one is much easier since we have a fresh slab of wood rather than a door caked in years of paint. Here is how we painted our solid wood doors (and how you can do it too!).

How To Paint Solid Wood Doors

1// Remove door from frame. Remove all door hardware including hinges. This will give you a clear surface to paint and keep your hardware paint-free!

2// Lay your doors flat! This is key in avoiding drip marks during the painting process and while the doors dry.

3// Gather your supplies. We found that a foam roller brush gives the smoothest finish on doors and cabinets. You will also need a primer made for bare wood if your doors did not come primed. We chose Valspar bare wood. You will also need a foam sander block. This is essential for sanding between coats of primer. Depending on the finish of your doors you will need fine or a moderate grit sanding block. We bought both just in case. These are great for other sanding projects around the house too. Lastly, you will need a tack cloth to clean off the sanding debris, and your choice of paint for the door.

4// Time to prime. Our doors were sanded well and smooth from the beginning so we did not sand prior to our first coat of primer. If your doors are uneven or have layers of paint, you will want to thoroughly sand them prior to priming. Using our foam roller we applied one coat of primer to each door and allowed it to dry for 2 hours  per the directions on the primer can.

5// Now that the primer is dried, its time to sand. We lightly sanded each door until the surface was smooth. Using a tack cloth, we then wiped the door of all sanding debris. This part is essential to keeping debris out of your paint and off of your roller.

6// (Optional) Depending on how well your primer went on and how porous your wood surface is, you may or may not want to coat with a second layer of primer. If so, repeat steps #4 & #5. We opted to move forward with painting at this point rather than a second coat of primer.

7// With the surface clean and dry, its time to paint. We really like Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint for trim and doors in our last house, so we went with it again. We also chose a semi-gloss finish in a custom white for the door. Using our foam rollers again, we rolled one coat of paint on to the door surface and allowed it to dry for 45 minutes.

8// Repeat step #7 until you have achieved an even coat throughout. We did three coats of paint total.

9// Once paint is completely dry, flip the doors and repeat steps 4-8.

10// Rehang newly painted doors. Replace hardware and hinges. Enjoy your newly painted wood doors!  (Before & After of our newly finished doors coming soon!)

Master Bedroom Design Plan

One of the best parts of our new home is having our own Master Suite. We are so excited to have a retreat of our own. Here is a little refresher of what the room looks like now.

Here are a few of the looks that have really inspired me for our new suite.

What I like Best: Rug, Pillows, White Comforter, Lamps

What I like Best: Headboard, Leather Bench, White Bedding

What I like Best: Wall Color, Headboard, Pillows

As you can probably tell, I like the tall tufted neutral headboard against dark walls. I also really love the all white bedding. I like symmetry in the matching lamps and side tables. I also like the geometric design on the rug under the neutral bedding to add texture. Here are a few design schemes for the room.

Master Bedroom Source List

A few weeks ago I gave you guys peak at our Master Bedroom. This week I am going to reveal where it all came from. As most of you already know, my favorite places to shop for accessories are West Elm, Target, & TJMaxx. You will see that I did not stray from my loves this go around either. I love how easy it is to mix all of the accessories from each place, the price point, and the quality. With that said, here is the source list for our master bedroom.

Paint Color: Sherwin Williams Paint in Benjamin Moore's Stratton Blue/
Leaf Pillow: Target / Bedding: Restoration Hardware Belgian Linen Collection in Ivory

96" Ivory & Gold Curtains: TJMaxx

Gold Sea Urchin: Target / Gold Frames with Linen Mattes: Target (no longer available)

Pottery & Gold Sphere: West Elm / Cherry Blossoms: TJMaxx

 Gold Beaded Pillow: West Elm

Three Wall Mirrors: Target (I also liked these and these)

Some of the items I didn't name:
White lamp: Local Nashville Boutique / Round side table: handmade for us by a friend (he's awesome - read about his photography here) / Rectangular bedside table and crystal lamp: once belonged to my grandmother & mother / Upholstered Headboard & Large Dresser: Sprintz Furniture (gifted to us by my parents)

We still have those four frames to fill in. Any ideas on what we should put there? I love the minted for West Elm collection, and I hear there are similar art options on Etsy. I also like the idea of doing something a bit more personal since it is our bedroom, like black and whites from our first date or Nashville places we love. Another idea is to go with some Rifle Paper co prints like these. Sigh...

Painting the Master Bedroom Stratton Blue & Moving the Bed

Last time you guys saw our master bedroom, you were voting on which direction for color we should go. The winner = Shades of Grey. AND THEN - I had a lightening bulb moment and decide to reverse our bedroom entirely. The room reversal changed the feel of the room so much that I was finally able to gain some momentum from a decorating standpoint. I was still dreading painting the room again (probably because we have painted our entire house inside and out in the last 11 months!) but with the direction change in the room, I loved the color again. In addition to changing the layout, we...

1. Moved one dresser into the entryway and replaced with the appropriate sized end table.
2. Accessorized - added one bed pillow, a side chair and pillow, hanged picture frames, added decorative vases and a floral arrangement
3. Curtain Install

Here's where we started (more on that here too!)....

And here is where we are at 90% complete...

So what's the 10% left?
1. Fill Picture Frames -
still working on WHAT to put in these. I am thinking a black and white mix of places Ty and I have been.
2. New lamp for Ty's side of the bed
3. Rug (I feel like this will not happen until the winter when our feet are cold!)

Have you guys finally finished a project that you started months ago?! Feels so good!

Poll vs Pole vs pole

My Cousin: "Did Caroline ever finish the pole for her bedroom?"
My Mother in Law: "Katie, a pole in Ty and Caroline's bedroom is none of my business!!!"

And while they may still be debating poll vs pole vs Pole...
The POLL results are in! and SHADES OF GREY is the winner!

We haven't taken the leap into re-painting the room (I am still recovering from painting the entire interior and attempting to paint the exterior) we have reversed our entire bedroom.

 From this....

 to this...and it is amazing!

We can now see into our beautiful back and side yard. With this new point of view I feel like I am in a whole new room. Who knows, I may even have started to like the color!
I will keep y'all posted on the happenings...no paint yet. Although GREY is the top of our list too!
What are your thoughts on the new direction of the room?

Design Tip:
Have a room that just doesn't feel right but not in the mood to paint?!
try rearranging the furniture!

Master Bedroom Inspiration

Ok, I confess: Our bedroom needs help!
I have been waffle-ing for months on which direction to take our master bedroom.
Here is where we are at right now...
On a whim I painted the whole room Stratton Blue (also the color of our front door).
Although I LOVE this color for the front door, I have not loved it for our bedroom.
It is a little too bold, and a little less relaxing than I'd hoped for.

You may remember that BACK IN NOVEMBER, (yes, I have had design block on our master bedroom for 5 months!!) I created this mood board:

Since then, I have changed my mind a thousand times on which direction to take with our bedroom.
Here are some bedrooms I absolutely LOVE...

BLUE!

Shades of Grey

Nice & Neutral

Eclectic & Orange

White Out

These rooms are ALL so beautiful.
I wish I could have one of each!
Which one do you like best?

Moving Our Master Bedroom

We have lived in our home by the creek for a total of  175 days. In that time we have completed a lot of small [but necessary] tasks like dismantling the loft and making a window screen; as well as the ONE BIG task of renovating our entire kitchen. To say the least, a LOT has changed. One thing I have come to find is that our house is always in flux. Moving furniture from one room to the next, thinking of new ideas and ways to improve our space, and learning how we use each room has this place constantly changing to meet our needs. The Master Bedroom has fluctuated the most of all the rooms in the house.

We first settled on the front bedroom, which originally was a peachy color.

We thought we would reside in the peachy bedroom and expand into this green room to make a en-suite bathroom. Upon further evaluation, this idea was not practical.

Then, on move in day (more on that here) we decided to make this room our office.

We continued to expand on the "office" idea for this room for awhile...

Until we painted the room off the kitchen....

Without the purple paint, this room became MUCH more appealing.

This satisfied us for a mere 30 days before we were on the move again...this time, to our final location!

And here we have landed, in the potential bathroom, turned office, turned bedroom. Ironically, this is the ONLY room we have not painted or done any type of updating. BUT, it is the coziest room in the house. It has a gorgeous view of the creek and two beautiful windows with lots of natural light. Because it is in the far corner of the house, it provides quiet and privacy too! We have loved being tucked away in our "new" master suite.

I am MOST excited about the blank slate to decorate in this room. We are in the midst of choosing a wall color and fabrics. When we were residing in the room off the kitchen, I created this mood board which is still in the running for our design scheme.  The jury is still out on what the final look will be, but we are excited to reveal it to y'all when we decide!

Have you guys ever changed a room what felt like a bazillion times before you got it right?
We'd LOVE to hear about your experience.
