Moonlight Ferns in the Dining Room

Our dining room (featured here and here) has also been work in progress. You may have noticed the sneak peak I gave you guys last week in my post about adding a bar to the living room. With the addition of artwork and curtains, the dining room is rounding the bend to complete (although the longer we live here, the less 'complete' I find things, and the more ideas I have!).

This artwork was featured a few weeks back in my Mid Week Must Haves series. When I discovered I could get these six identically framed prints for a steal, I jumped at the opportunity. These prints are made by Uttermost and can be found here and here.

We are loving these 6 new additions to our space!

Creating DIY Art from Fancy Paper

With the chair debacle of 2014 resolved, I wanted to focus on decorating the mantle to finish up the living room. I looked for art at antique malls, garage sales, and even did some online shopping but I still could not find what I wanted for the living room. I really liked this piece from Ballard Designs. It is colorful and abstract... but too large for our space.

I wanted to create something similar but I was nervous about doing something abstract on such a large scale. In the past, I did some abstract art for our kitchen, but it was more of a whimsy and fun look rather than the more formal look I wanted for the living room.

I have also seen some amazing marble wrapping papers lately and thought using one of those sheets as art would be fun. I went to a fancy paper supplier here in Nashville and while I was looking at the marble papers, I stumbled upon this Ombre Paper that was a perfect fit for our living room.

Originally I thought that I was going to do to frames side by side on the mantle, so I bought two. It is $6 a sheet - for art this is a cheap risk to take, for wrapping paper it about kills me to purchase it (I digress). I had two frames from botanical prints I was using in the dining room (more on that change up later). I decided to use those frames ($25 each on clearance at TJMaxx) for my art to make an easy DIY Custom Framed Art for only $30.

First, I took the brown kraft paper backing off of the frame. It was super easy. I used an xacto knife to pierce a small shallow hole in the back, and then I ripped off the thin paper backing.

Next, I had to pry up each staple holding the matte board in place. I lost a lot of staples along the way, but did try to be gentle as I went so that I could use them again to secure the matting when I replaced it with the new artwork.

Once the staples were open, I could easily remove the matte board and artwork.

The matte board and artwork were glued together - surprise! I did not anticipate this, but using an xacto knife I was able to gently separate the matte board from the artwork. I did not worry about messing up the old art and focused on keeping the matte board intact.

Once separated, I placed the matte over my Ombre Paper. Fortunately, the paper was the exact size I needed. But if it had been too large, I would have used an xacto knife and metal ruler to cut it to the correct size for the matte.

The matte still had some sticky back lefts so it secured easily to the new artwork. I then placed the new matted art back in the frame, and secured the staples that were left. Voila! New art!! You could also opt to replace the paper back board but with my flare for change and decorating, I figure its only a matter of time before I want to try something new.

Gallery Wall Inspiration

One of my mid-week must-haves revealed one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE Gallery walls.
I dream of having a gallery wall as gorgeous as this one in our home one day.

As I begin to build on my ideas for the den (more on that here), I am thinking this wall looks pretty perfect for a gallery wall inspiration...

I have already started "collecting" (and by collecting I mean storing links to these amazing images so I can one day buy them!) art for my gallery wall. It is a little intimidating to think about filling an entire wall with art, much less purchasing all of it and hoping it all works together. Here are some of the things I have found thus far...

Moon And Back From Target.com

Blue Floral Card by Rifle Paper Co

Coffee Print on Etsy

...and last but not least the artichoke prints I found on the cheap at Home Goods!
As your saw here, similar ones are available at West Elm.

Overall I think this is a pretty good start for my gallery wall inspiration!
Have you guys found any great prints or places you just LOVE to buy art from?

DIY I love you Art

There is no better time than Valentine's Day to recreate some of my favorite art by Alice Lane Home (not feeling an art project today? You can find them here) At $437 a pop, my Valentine may be feeling less than loving if I purchased these on a whim, SO I set out to make my own version of my favorite word art.

I purchased two 20x20 gallery wrapped canvas boards at Michael's ($18 each with a 40% off coupon). I always prefer to get the "level 3" canvases because they have a thick 1 inch surround that gives art a professional finished look.

Using white acrylic craft paint, I painted a base layer of white. Then, I combined a little brown in the mix to give the canvas a "distressed" look. {Sorry this is a little hard to see in the pictures.}

Next I used a medium point paint pen (pictured below) to write in script the "i love you" words. I practiced on another canvas first before writing in freehand on the actual project canvas. I also tried several other pens first to no avail - a fabric pen, a sharpie, and a fine point acrylic paint pen.

Then came the writing...

What do you think of the final results?
It cost me less than $60 versus around $850 for the originals

Have you done any fun Valentine's Craft Projects this season?

Happy Valentine's Day! Go hug someone you love.

DIY Abstract Art

I have been searching  for the PERFECT back splash for our kitchen sink. My mom, who is an amazing interior designer, suggested I pick out a piece of abstract art. After seeing a few example canvases online (and their prices!), I thought... I CAN DO THAT!

I started with a canvas I acquired at a Sips and Strokes Bachelorette Party earlier this year. Needless to say, that artwork did not turn out to be a masterpiece, BUT the background color is perfect for my space!

SUPPLIES:

Canvas
Acrylic Paints
A Variety of Paint Brushes
A place to mix your paints.
I use a paper plate covered in aluminum foil (makes clean up a breeze!)
A Drop cloth.
I use an old fitted twin sheet to cover our rectangular kitchen table.
The elastic corners keep the sheet from sliding.

READY TO CREATE!

First, I covered the existing artwork in a similar blue color.
And LET IT DRY.

After that, the fun begins!
The best part about abstract art is it can look any way you wish.
I just kept layering paint and colors until it came out just right.

FINISHED PRODUCT!
This project cost me a whopping $0 as I already had all of the supplies.

I am SO PROUD of how this turned out.
What a BIG difference this SMALL piece of artwork makes in our kitchen!
